Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition that needs to be deeply understood if patient, parents, and doctor want to make progress in countering the disease. The disorder occurs during the early age of childhood and is characterized by difficulties in social skills, repetitive behavior, speech, and nonverbal communication. Moreover, the condition occurs in many subtypes thus a better understanding of the condition requires an appropriate children’s autism assessment to know the kind of ASD to diagnose.

Assessing Autism

Occasionally, children are diagnosed as autistic yet they aren’t. As such, both the parents and the clinicians should be certain of what to test during the autism assessment. Another screening tool is the STAT, that gives detailed information about possible autism but also requires further evaluation.

If the screener shows that the child may have ASD, the child should receive specialize diagnosis from an autism specialist. Universally accepted diagnosis instrument like the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, ADOS-2 is ideal to carry out children’s autism assessment. The test has different modules that accommodate a range of children; it evaluates social skills and repetitive traits exhibited during the test. However, the test is dependent on the child’s ability to accommodate others and adapt to change.

The information provided about the child’s early stage is important in making a decision on autistic individuals. Usually, autism develops during childhood age and such information help make an accurate diagnosis. Also what the parent observes at home can be different from what the school teacher observes. This will lead to an informed diagnosis.

Most important in any autism assessment procedure is working with an autism specialist. Working with a specialist with experience and expertise in autism spectrum is vital. Getting the right person for the right task is important and one should consult an experienced diagnostician. Prior screening of the ideal practitioners should be done by the parent asking the potential practitioner relevant question about autism.
