One of the most insightful, comprehensive and “do-able” books on job search that I have ever read! Mr. Myers offers clear, straightforward information on what a job seeker needs to understand at each phase of the process, without being overwhelming. He gives a wake-up call regarding the challenges of job search in a difficult economy. The author is not shy about telling job seekers what techniques are inefficient or just plain “lazy.” He takes the book to the next level with easy to follow, step-by-step guidelines, tools, and strategies. Mr. Myers demonstrates the wide breadth of his expertise – he provides the “inside scoop” to a cutting edge job search campaign at multiple levels, including impressive cover letters, effective marketing, and even attention to online identity in order to stand out. This book provides wonderful, unconventional advice and strategies that I believe will catapult results for today’s job seeker!

Ford is absolutely correct in his total/ 360 degree presentation of what it takes to get the job you want. I just concluded my own successfukl job search using the strategies in “Get The Job You Want, Even When No One is Hiring”. Myers communicates these “job search truths” in a straightforward, no nonsense manner. This book works on both the intellectual and emotional levels: the author provides effective tactics and practical tools – and he also addresses the universal fears and concerns I experienced during my search. Every job seeker should read this book before they even think about embarking on a job search campaign!
I was camping with a few of my friends last month and had this book sitting out. With me was a friend, Brian, who had been laid off from his first and only job, which he had for 10 years. He was pretty disillusioned and no attempts to give him advice, support, or encouragement had helped him make any progress toward his next career move. After the 4th day, I could tell that someone else had been reading this book and Brian’s demeanor had vastly improved. Around the campfire that last night, he announced excitedly, “Guys, I know what I’m going to do with my life. I have a plan and it’s great!” He’d been wavering between going back to a corporate position and starting his own consulting company. He’d moved forward with neither because he didn’t feel confident he’d be able to be successful at either. Ford’s book helped him access his driving factors and put things in applicable terms so that he could feel empowered to move forward. He has made a lot of progress since then, and, while I think he’d like to take all the credit, I know it was Ford’s book.
Career-coach and author Ford Myers has written a gem of a book, “Get the Job You Want When No One’s Hiring,” for those in or contemplating a career-transition. Myers draws on his deep experience helping thousands of people take charge of their careers, find jobs they love, and earn what they deserve.
“Get the Job” is organized around five topics:
* The psychology of job hunting in a down market
* From desperation to career strategies for tough times
* Leveraging your core job seeker materials
* Job search tactics to use when no one’s hiring
* Bulletproof your career, once and for all
The book provides tests for introspection (your values and gifts, passions, career goals, and the ideal job), networking tips, tools to develop all the materials the reader will need (a marketing template, elevator pitch, and resume), sample “accomplishment” stories, interviewing tips and questions, negotiating tips, and post-search career management tools. All of the tests and forms provided in the book can also be downloaded from the web.
Myers provides a number of gems as well as the rules of the road. These include:
* The number secret in job search success (why some people land jobs when no one’s hiring!)
* The Seven Truths of Career Success for both good times and bad
* What employers do differently when there are more applicants than jobs
* Twenty habits of highly effective job seekers in a down market
* Why your resume is your least important tool
* The number one way to get hired when no one is hiring
* How to create an on-line identity
I have reviewed many books written for those in-transition and would put this one at the top of my list, “Get the Job” is comprehensive, well structured, easy to follow, and will serve as an excellent resource for years to come.
“Get the job” provides all the ammunition needed for productive job hunting.
This book is a good resource for those who are looking for a book that gives an overview for finding a job and then some…great work!
